City Council Proclaims May as Historic Preservation Month

The City Council joined communities around the nation in proclaiming May 2009 as National Proclamation Month.

National Historic Preservation Month

May 2009

WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for economic development, heritage tourism, managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and

WHEREAS, historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural, and for Americans of all ages, all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people; and

WHEREAS, the Marion City Council established a Historic Preservation Commission to protect our community’s historic resources; and

WHEREAS, “This Place Matters” is the theme for National Preservation Month 2009, cosponsored by the City of Marion and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, A. Everette Clark, Mayor do proclaim May 2009 as

National Preservation Month

and call upon the people of the City of Marion to join their fellow citizens across the United States in recognizing and participating in this special observance.

HPC To Review McDowell House Application

The City of Marion Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public hearing on May 7, 2009 at Marion City Hall at 7:00 p.m to review an application submitted by the McDowell House Committee . The request is for the HPC to make recommendation to the City Council for the McDowell House to be recognized as a local landmark. The meeting is open to the public and all interested persons are welcome to attend.

May Is National Preservation Month

The theme for 2009′s National Preservation Month is “This Place Matters!” Preservation Month is designed to raise awareness about the power historic preservation has to protect and enhance our homes, neighborhoods and communities – the places that really matter to us. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and towns, and enables all of us to become involved in the growing preservation movement.

This year the City of Marion has demonstrated how much this place matters by enacting a new historic preservation ordinance and appointing a new historic preservation commission. In addition, this month, the City will be reviewing its first application for the Joseph McDowell House designating it as a local landmark site.

We hope that you will join the City of Marion and citizens from across the county celebrate National Preservation Month.
